Marrakech to Essaouira: How to Get There & Is It Worth It?

I do not remember the exact month but it was summer when I first went from Marrakech to Essaouira, and I remember the feeling of it clearly.

Moroccan woman standing with her young son outside the old medina walls in Essaouira, Morocco, on a sunny summer day during a trip from Marrakech.

Essaouira in summer with my son, outside the old medina walls after the road west from Marrakech.

We left Marrakech by car, with its heat, noise, movement and red walls behind us, and drove west towards the Atlantic. Then Morocco changed mood completely. The air became colder, the wind stronger, and suddenly there was sea instead of dust, white walls instead of red, blue boats instead of traffic, and a town that felt like it belonged more to the ocean than to the land.

I am Moroccan, but I am from Tangier, not Essaouira. So I do not write about this town as a local from there, and I will not pretend I know every corner like someone born under that Atlantic wind. But as a Moroccan who has seen how many travellers arrive in Marrakech and never look beyond it, I can say this honestly: Essaouira deserves more attention. It is only a few hours from Marrakech, but it feels like a completely different Morocco.

Most people fly into Marrakech, stay in Marrakech, maybe take a desert tour, maybe go to the Atlas Mountains, and then leave. Marrakech is powerful, yes. It is beautiful, historical, chaotic, overwhelming and addictive in its own way. But Morocco is not only Marrakech, and Essaouira is one of the easiest ways to feel that difference without planning a complicated route. It gives you the Atlantic, old ramparts, fishing boats, Gnaoua music, seafood, wind, cold water, and a slower rhythm after the madness of the red city.

If you are planning the Marrakech to Essaouira route, this guide answers the practical questions: how to get there, whether there is a train, whether a day trip is enough, what Essaouira beach is really like, when the Gnaoua Festival happens, and whether it makes sense to continue from Essaouira to Agadir or Taghazout.

Is Essaouira worth visiting from Marrakech?

Yes, Essaouira is worth visiting from Marrakech, especially if you want to see a completely different side of Morocco without travelling too far. Marrakech is inland, hot, intense and full of movement. Essaouira is coastal, windy, slower and shaped by the Atlantic. It is not the place I would recommend if your only dream is warm, calm water and a perfect swimming beach, but it is absolutely worth it for the medina, the port, the seafood, the music and the atmosphere.

Essaouira is the kind of place that works as both a day trip and an overnight stop, but the experience changes depending on how long you stay. A day trip lets you see the medina, the beach and the fishing port. An overnight stay lets you feel the town after the rush of visitors, when the wind is still there, the streets become lighter, and the sea keeps making noise.

If your Morocco trip is only Marrakech and you want one easy coastal escape, Essaouira makes sense. If you are planning a longer Morocco route, it also works beautifully between Marrakech and Agadir or Taghazout.

How far is Essaouira from Marrakech?

Essaouira is around 190 kilometres from Marrakech, and the journey usually takes about 2.5 or 3 hours by road, depending on traffic, stops and the type of transport you choose. It is not next door, but it is close enough to be realistic as a day trip.

That distance is exactly why Essaouira works so well for travellers who want to escape Marrakech without committing to a huge journey. You can leave the heat and the chaos of the city in the morning and be by the Atlantic before lunch, which is honestly one of Morocco’s better tricks. The country really does enjoy changing landscapes on you, as if the map is showing off. Can’t blame it.

How to get from Marrakech to Essaouira

There are several ways to get from Marrakech to Essaouira, and the best option depends on your budget, confidence, time and whether you want independence or convenience. You can travel by bus, rental car, private transfer or organised day trip. There is no direct train from Marrakech to Essaouira, which matters because many people search for it and might get disappointed.

Marrakech to Essaouira by bus

The bus is usually the best option if you are travelling independently and want to keep costs down. It is simple, direct and commonly used by both locals and travellers. CTM and Supratours are the main names people usually look at for this route, and the journey generally takes around 3 hours.

For a first-time visitor, the bus is a good balance between budget and ease. You do not need to drive or negotiate, and you can arrive in Essaouira without making the day complicated. If you are travelling during busy periods, weekends or around the Gnaoua Festival, book your bus ticket ahead rather than assuming there will be space. Morocco can be relaxed, but transport planning during festivals is not the place to test destiny like a dramatic fool.

Marrakech to Essaouira by car

I went from Marrakech to Essaouira by car, and this is the option that gives you the most flexibility. Driving means you can leave when you want, stop when you want, and continue afterwards towards Agadir or Taghazout if you are on a longer coastal route. It also makes sense if you are travelling with family, carrying luggage, or planning more than one stop outside Marrakech.

The road is not especially complicated, but like anywhere in Morocco, driving requires attention. You need to be comfortable with Moroccan roads, traffic habits, roundabouts, sudden movement, and the occasional “why is this happening in the road?” moment. Morocco is beautiful, but it does not always operate like a neat European traffic day.

If you rent a car, think about where you will park in Essaouira. The medina itself is not where you casually drive in and slide into a perfect parking spot. Usually, you park outside or near the edges and walk in. This is another reason to check accommodation carefully before booking, especially if you have luggage. But there are plenty of parking spaces that you can pay daily and are looked after. It costs around £5 a day, negotiations are needed here.

Marrakech to Essaouira by private transfer

A private transfer is the easiest option if you do not want to deal with buses, tickets, terminals or driving. It is more expensive, but it can be worth it if you are travelling with children, arriving with luggage, nervous about transport, or simply want the least stressful route.

A transfer also works well if you are short on time and want to make the trip smoother. For example, you could travel from your Marrakech riad directly to Essaouira, stay overnight, and then continue to Agadir or return to Marrakech. This is not the cheapest way, but not every traveller is the same.

Marrakech to Essaouira day trip or tour

A day tour from Marrakech to Essaouira is the simplest option if you have limited time and do not want to arrange transport yourself. It is not the most flexible way to visit, but it works if your Morocco itinerary is already full and you only want a taste of the coast.

The downside is that Essaouira can feel rushed as a day trip. You spend several hours on the road in total, and once you arrive, you have limited time to walk the medina, see the port, eat, visit the beach and actually breathe. If you only have one free day, do it. If you can stay overnight, I think Essaouira deserves that.

Is there a train from Marrakech to Essaouira?

No, there is no direct train from Marrakech to Essaouira. If you are searching for a Marrakech to Essaouira train, the practical alternatives are bus, car, private transfer or organised day trip.

This matters because Morocco does have useful train routes between major cities, including places like Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Fez and Marrakech. But Essaouira is not connected by train, so do not plan your route around a train that does not exist.

Marrakech to Essaouira day trip or overnight?

You can visit Essaouira as a day trip from Marrakech, but overnight is better if your itinerary allows it. A day trip gives you the main sights: the medina, the fishing port, the ramparts, the beach and a seafood lunch. It is enough to say you have seen Essaouira, but not always enough to feel it properly.

An overnight stay gives the town more space to work on you. You can arrive without rushing, walk the medina slowly, eat by the sea, watch the light change, and experience the town when some of the day trippers have gone. Essaouira is not just a checklist place. Its atmosphere is part of the reason to go, and atmosphere needs time. Annoying, but true.

If you are visiting during the Gnaoua Festival, overnight is not just better, it is almost necessary. The festival changes the rhythm of the town, and accommodation can become harder to find or more expensive. If you want to be there for the music, book early and stay close enough to walk, because trying to improvise during a major festival is how humans create avoidable suffering and then call it adventure.

What Essaouira is actually like

Essaouira feels completely different from Marrakech. Marrakech is red, inland, hot and intense. Essaouira is white, blue, windy and Atlantic. The town has a medina, but it does not carry the same pressure as Marrakech. There is still movement, still trade, still people calling you into shops, but the whole atmosphere is softer and more open.

The fishing port is one of the most memorable parts of Essaouira. You see the blue boats, the nets, the gulls, the fish, the working side of the town. The ramparts and sea walls add that old Atlantic feeling, the kind of place where history and weather sit together. There is something about Essaouira that feels worn by salt and wind in the best way possible.

For me, Essaouira feels like Morocco exhaling. It is still Moroccan, still layered and historical, but it does not hit you in the same way Marrakech does. It gives you space. Cold space, windy space, sand-in-your-eyes space, but space.

Is Essaouira beach good for swimming?

Essaouira has a beach, and yes, you can swim there, but it is not the kind of beach I would sell as soft, warm and calm. This is important because many people search for a beach near Marrakech and imagine a gentle sunny beach day. Essaouira is not always that.

The beach is wide, open and beautiful, but it can be very windy. The water can feel cold, the waves can be rough, and the wind can throw sand into your eyes with unnecessary violence, because the Atlantic has attitude. It is swimmable, but I would not call it the best swimming beach in Morocco. If your dream is warm still water, you may prefer somewhere further south, like Agadir or Taghazout.

Essaouira beach is better for walking, kitesurfing, horse rides, watching the sea and sitting in the wind. It is a beach town, yes, but not a resort beach in the usual sense. That is not a bad thing, it is actually part of why Essaouira has character.

The Gnaoua Festival: why summer is a powerful time to visit Essaouira

Essaouira is strongly connected with Gnaoua music, and the city hosts the famous Essaouira Gnaoua and World Music Festival. The 2026 edition is scheduled for 25 to 27 June 2026, which is the 27th edition. Check the official Essaouira Gnaoua and World Music Festival website for current dates, tickets and programme updates.

If you are visiting Morocco in summer, this festival can completely change the reason to visit Essaouira. The town becomes louder, busier and more alive, with Gnaoua music, world music and cultural fusion filling the city. It is not just a small local event hidden in a corner. It is one of the things that makes Essaouira culturally important beyond being “the beach town near Marrakech.”

But this also means you need to plan. Accommodation can book up, prices can rise, and transport can become busier. If you want to visit Essaouira during the Gnaoua Festival, do not leave your stay until the last minute. Book early and stay within walking distance if possible.

Search Essaouira accommodation for Gnaoua Festival dates.

What to do in Essaouira if you only have one day

If you only have one day in Essaouira, focus on the medina, the port, the ramparts and the beach. Start with the medina, where you can wander through shops, cafés and old walls without the same intensity you may feel in Marrakech. Then head towards the fishing port, where the blue boats and working harbour give Essaouira its strongest visual identity. After that, walk the ramparts and look out at the Atlantic, because this is where the town feels most beautiful.

Eat seafood if you like fish, then walk along the beach. Just remember that the beach is windy and often cold, so bring layers instead of assuming that Morocco is one temperature everywhere. That is a classic tourist mistake. Morocco has mountains, desert, coast, wind, snow and heat.

If you are staying later, sunset by the sea is worth it. If you are there around festival season, check what music is happening in town, because Essaouira and music belong together.

Can you continue from Essaouira to Agadir or Taghazout?

Yes, Essaouira works very well as part of a longer Morocco coastal route. Instead of going from Marrakech to Essaouira and then returning to Marrakech, you can continue south towards Agadir or Taghazout. This makes sense if you want a route that mixes city, Atlantic town and beach/surf areas.

This is a much better option if you want Morocco to feel less rushed and less centred around one city. Marrakech gives you the intensity, Essaouira gives you the Atlantic atmosphere, and Agadir or Taghazout gives you a warmer beach-surf direction. It also means Essaouira becomes more than a day trip. It becomes a natural stop in a longer Morocco itinerary.

Where to stay in Essaouira

If you stay overnight in Essaouira, the best area depends on what kind of trip you want. If you want atmosphere and easy walking, stay in or near the medina. This is the best choice for a short stay because you can walk to the port, ramparts, shops, restaurants and sea without needing much transport.

If you want more space and easier beach access, look closer to the beach. This can be better if you are staying longer, travelling with family, or want to wake up near the sea rather than inside the medina. Just remember that beach access does not mean calm beach weather. Essaouira will still be windy.

If you are visiting during the Gnaoua Festival, location matters even more. Staying within walking distance of the centre can save you stress, especially at night when the town is busier. Prices may also rise around festival dates, so this is not the moment to browse casually and assume the universe will arrange a cheap riad for you out of kindness.

Is Essaouira safe for travellers from Marrakech?

Essaouira is generally considered one of the more relaxed tourist towns in Morocco, especially compared with Marrakech. That does not mean you should switch your brain off, but the atmosphere can feel easier and less intense.

As a woman, I would still recommend the same normal Morocco travel awareness: watch your belongings, avoid walking alone in empty areas late at night, arrange transport clearly, and choose accommodation with good recent reviews. If you are arriving by bus, know how you are getting from the station to your stay before you arrive. Small bits of planning make a big difference, especially when you are tired or carrying bags.

Final verdict: should you add Essaouira to your Morocco trip?

You should add Essaouira to your Morocco trip if you want to see a different side of the country without travelling too far from Marrakech. It is worth it for the Atlantic air, the medina, the port, the ramparts, the seafood, the Gnaoua music and the feeling of stepping into a colder, windier, slower Morocco.

You may be disappointed if you go only for a perfect beach day. Essaouira beach is beautiful, but it is not the warm calm swimming beach many people imagine when they hear “Morocco coast.” The water can be cold, the sea can be rough, and the wind is not playing games. But if you go for atmosphere, history, music and a real change of mood from Marrakech, Essaouira is absolutely worth the road west.

Essaouira is not Marrakech with a beach attached. It is its own place. It is saltier, colder, softer, rougher and more Atlantic. For me, that is exactly why it matters. Morocco is not one city, one colour, one climate or one story. Sometimes you only need to drive a few hours from Marrakech to remember that.
